My Beloved World: Other Questions

  • Why is dialogue important in a memoir?
  • Since Sonia was born in the States, why is it important to her to research the history of Puerto Rico?
  • On p. 219 (and elsewhere) Sotomayor says that she's not going to write about her "jurisprudence" (essentially, her philosophy of law). Is that fair? Can she tell us about her life and refuse to talk about this vital part of her career?

  1. Dialogue is important in her memoir because it shows the characters personalities and it helps the stories being told between characters to sound more real.
Since Sonia was born in the states it is very important for her to research the history of Puerto Rico because she will able to learn about her background more and have an idea what it was like many years ago. She has no first hand knowledge of what Puerto Ricans had to encounter. I believe Sonia will be able to appreciate her ethnicity even more.

  2. I believe Sonia has her own particular judicial system that she follows, I don't believe it's fair to expose this information. If she allows it to be exposed, it might create opportunity for other lawyers or even clients to go around her work ethic. Sonia can't allow everyone to know how she thinks in her line of work.

Since Sonia was born in the states, it is important to her research about her history in Puerto Rico because Sonia will be able to write an idea about her background and knowledge about her personality.

  4. I believe dialogue is important because it gives a sense who the person is and adds authenticity to the story. Sonia's research on the history of puerto rico is so important because it informs her of the struggles puerto ricans have gone through and helps to appreciate her roots even more.

  5. I Believe that dialogue Is important in the book towards memoir because a memoir is a book about yourself you want the reader to get involved in the action, to expierence what you have to actually be part of the book. that is why for my dialogue is really important in the book.

  6. Honestly I like the book but as I read on I do expect to read something on her philosophy of law. I think its a cheat if she spends all this time writing a memoir and leaves out a large portion of her life. I am enjoying the book so far but if there isn't any mention of her judicial tenure I will be disappointed.

  7. Sotomayor says that she's not going to write about her "jurisprudence". It is not fair because people need the opportunity to see her work and Sonia doesn't allowed anyone to read her story while she is thinking about her own work.

  8. In a memoir its good to use dialogue because it engages your reader into your reality. It's important for the reader to understand exactly what you are trying to say and using your own words to describe or tell a certain event helps the reader understand and not leave it up to interpretation.
It was important for Sonia to learn about Puerto Rico because she lived in the states and although she did go there on vacation she had never realized the trouble her country was in and the different issues they were having.
Sotomayor doesn't tell us her view I think because she still is a judge. I think she wanted to hold back because she didn't want to give the readers everything. She wanted to share how she came to be a judge.

  9. Dialogue is important because it tells important details in the story, and it shows the reality of the characters personality. The emotions, expressions, actions. It enables the readers to know more about the writers life based on real facts.
Sonia's research on Puerto Rico history will give her more knowledge and important information about her Hispanic background

  10. The dialogue is important because a tone can define the mood from characters. Sonia born in the States, but her roots are from Puerto Rico. She need to know about her family background, I guess it is her motive know about Puerto Rico. Sonia leave clear that she in not going to write about jurisprudence because is not the propose of this book, if it is fair? well could be not fair but I'm pretty sure that some other reason she has to avoid to write about this important part of her life.
