Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 101 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

I think someone could become an interesting person but having complex thoughts, truthful reasoning and understanding.
ReplyDeleteEmotions are very important in debating because if the other person doesn't understand your feelings and also doesn't feel anything towards the subject(happy, sad, angry, etc) themselves, they wont be engage and really analyze the situation.
On page 175, Sonia's mother was panicking about writing her paper for Hostos. Sonia mom suggested that she write her paper. I believe this is wrong because in the previous chapter Sonia struggled to complete one of her papers as well but she went and seek extra resources to help her better her writing and in the end she realized what she was doing wrong and overcomed the obstacle. Sonia never gave up and she wanted her mom to do the same because in the end it is beneficial for her future and Sonia believed that her mom could get the job done. So in turn she helped Celina instead.
ReplyDeleteI believe the nurse had a problem would Sonia getting a "likely" from Princeton because she was a minority going places. I think her reaction was stemming of of discrimination and a shock because the students she expected to receive a "likely" didn't.
ReplyDeleteI think the nurse had a problem with Sonia's acceptance to Princeton because it conflicted with her belief and understanding of what a person can accomplish, she expected those other 2 girls to be accepted because of their rank and social status, but she didn't weigh in Sonia's rank as 1 of the top ten students in the school even with her responsibilities and hardships at home. She might have even been jealous of Sonia.
ReplyDeleteI think that one person could be an interesting person by being faithful to them or truthful. Yes, I agree that emotion is important because you need to know what people feel about your emotion and tell them how you feel towards them. The school nurse have a problem with Sonia getting a likely from Princeton because they think that Sonia is really smart and they are probably jealous of her.

Delete"How could one become an interersting person?"
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that an interesting person is the product of different experiences. What makes a person interesting is what makes the other person different than me. For example, I would not find much interest in a person that has experienced all the things that I have and has the same feelings that I do. An interesting person has lived differently and their experiences have molded their perspectives on life, including their future.
It could also be her understanding of what she need to accomplish. It will be wrong because Sonia completed one of her papers to see if she did good on her paper for she could do it better next time. Sonia also realized that whatever she did was wrong is wrong and Sonia believe in her mom because she wants Sonia to become someone in the future for herself.

ReplyDeleteI believe that an interesting person is just being yourself, having a voice, being confident.
ReplyDeleteYes emotion is important, to express the way that you feel to your audience when debating so that they can personally understand your point of view and connect with what you're saying.
Sonia had the confidence in her mom and she knew that her mom could write her own paper, Sonia wanted her mom to be confident in herself and to seek the support if she needed it from other resources, because that's what Sonia did when she was having a hard time with her work. Celina needs to do what's right because it will help her with her career progress and also set a good example for her children.
On page 133 Sonia ask herself "How could one become an interesting person?" I believe one becomes an interesting person when they are determine to do the utmost best possible to find their value/ place in life and contribute to the society when possible. We are all born for a unique reason and when we find that purpose, often times we become so passionate that we get so engrossed in learning and expanding our knowledge as much as we see fit. One also becomes an interesting person when other individuals see the hard work and dedication that you put it. This becomes a inspiration because they see the way your accomplishments in life were achieved.
ReplyDeleteIn Chapter 13 Sonia sensed that emotion was important too when debating. She discovered this when she told a very convincing story about a crime committed in an alley, people heard but no one spoke up on it. She tried to get make a point on how something like this could have happened and why? I felt like the audience felt emotional and may have try to sense themselves in that same predicament, any one caught in that position would have needed help. None of the 38 neighbors were brave to do so. The emotions of the audience from the story got her to win the debate. I also believe this was a very valuable lesson for her as a future law student, to persuade and be able to sense what the jurors are thinking and therefore maybe try to make the story more emotionally convincing. Although in court emotions alone cannot win a case you need evidence as well.
